Adult Protective Services Systems APS

Though Automated Protective Services APS systems have been created by states to track reports of abuse and neglect, they may still experience problems that question the effectiveness of their overall system. Such problems that exist are:

Problems with Legal System: In some cases there has been a lack of training for law enforcement officers. This has resulted in less than thorough criminal investigations. However in places where law enforcement had more than adequate training for handling such issues, this was not a problem.

Not A Priority of State: On occasion the local government does not see the need for preventing Elder abuse as much as other, more notable forms of abuse such as child abuse. It has been noted in situations where a respected system that has been effectively implemented by other states is introduced, the local government may be inclined to be more interested.

Lack of Reliable Data: Because of years of working with cases manually, and duplicate case documents and confusion arising from that, many systems have complained that there is a lack of reliable data. This is an almost unavoidable problem, but in addition to being more desirable than the alternative of not having an automated computerized tracking system, it is only a temporary setback.

Other Problems: In some cases differences between agencies have resulted in communication barriers between agencies using APS systems (If there was a single system, this might not be an issue).
